Jenna Cole Photography-Dallas, TX bio picture

Welcome to Jenna Cole!

Investing in a camera and launching this business has given me the
chance to merge the two activities I love most, photography and blogging. After spending several months taking still life photos for my other blogging endeavors (That Bride, Weddingbee, and That Wife) I realized that I wanted to start spending time with people. I wanted to spend my days taking pictures of people that helped them to see how beautiful they are.

I want to capture the moments in your life as they are happening, as they would happen even if I wasn't there with you. When the light falls just right, and the boy and the girl look at each other just so, magic happens. I want to be there for that moment, composing an image that tells a story, your story.

You can read more about my personal life at That Wife, add me on Twitter, or find me on Facebook. Thank you for visiting and for commenting (I read them all and they make my day!).

As I prepare for the next big event in my life (the birth of my baby in April!), I'm going to be refocusing my business and sacling back on the number and type of sessions I am accepting. I'll be on maternity leave beginning in March and lasting through May. Please contact me if you have any questions!

Engagement: Daci + Yoni

Daci and Yoni take the prize as my favorite engagement session yet. We stumbled on a killer location (found randomly using Google Maps), and developed a sort of a “P” theme. Puppy, picnic, photo frame, parasol, puddles, peacock, and of course lots ‘o passion.

Can you believe this was one of the first frames I snapped? The two of them are incredibly natural in front of the camera. Don’t you love their cute little puppy Ike with his tongue wagging in the background behind them?

These two met at LSU – they were both officers in Hillel (a Jewish organization).  Daci was secretary, and the “minutes” that he typed up and sent out to everyone were really funny – and that’s when Daci knew he was the one.

Their wedding is on June 28 in Baton Rouge, LA. When they showed up that day they revealed that they are actually trying to get their wedding announcement in the New York Times. We took the requisite “eyebrows on the same level” headshot and they sent in their application. They are two Jews getting married in the South, which according to them happens… never. They would have been the first Jewish wedding in Baton Roughe in 4 and a half years but an elderly couple were married last year and ruined that part of their story. They are getting married in a sanctuary that was destroyed in Hurricane Rita. They are the first couple married in the sanctuary in approximately 14 years. I think that’s quite the selling point don’t you?

THAT SHOT!

I am absolutely head over heels in love with this image. I lurrrvvveeee it.

IMG_9800 copy

Ike was scared to death of this log and it was absolutely hilarious! Daci told me he also very, very afraid of hats.

SOOC!

Aren’t photos like this fun?

Ike was starting to get a little bit antsy so we took him back to the car. While they were loading him I took the opportunity to grab a ring shot in one of the stumps near the cars. Isn’t Daci’s ring stunning?

IMG_9840 copy

Somethin’ a little bit edgy.

IMG_9902 copy

Daci brought a bunch of props along, this pretty parasol being one of them. I love props and encourage ALL of my clients to bring them along to their shoot.

IMG_9931 copy

Stunning.

IMG_9953 copy

I was a little bit giddy about this spot with the tall grass. See what I mean about these two being natural models?

IMG_9993 copy

Another prop that Daci pulled out of her trunk was this photo frame. We tried to come up with a non-cheesy way to use it. I only got one shot I really liked out of the setup, but I love the pose they settled into so naturally.

As we were shooting one of them pointed oveer toward the road and said “Peacock!” Ummm… what?

They were right, there really was a peacock strutting around across the street. We had a delightful time chasing after him and I am absolutely delighted with what I captured. Her dress is the perfect accessorry to his pretty feathers!

The biggest reason why this is my favorite engagemet shoot thus far — these two let me do a little bit of expirementing with some ideas I’ve been dreaming up.

I bought this 1970’s Emily Post weddiquette book at the library and brought it along. Yoni brought his anatomy book out from the car and this shot — which so perfectly describes what wedding planning is like for most couples — was born. I will say tht Yoni strikes me as the type of groom that would be very hands on and involved in the planning process. More than anything this shot was born of my own imagination, not the reality of their situation!

I gave them an apple ‘cuz I’m nice like that. Apparently they are both left-handed. How often does that happen?

IMG_0146 copy

You all know how much I love to encourage my couples to go at it a little bit. I haven’t had anyone turn me down yet.

IMG_0246 copy

HOT HOT HOT.

These two drove 3 WHOLE HOURS one way, just for this shoot. Apparently they’ve caught the travel bug and love to go on road trips together, using the code names Steve and Amy Patterson to avoid having to explain their They sent me the link to their travel blog, and it’s definitely a must read. Remember that sense of humor that made Daci fall for Yoni? You’ll find it all over their travelogue blog. I just spent 5 minutes laughing hysterically at his description of their attempt to get back over the border from Canada. Go read it. Really. And you’ll learn why Yoni loves Daci – she has got quite the sense of humor herself.

IMG_0321 copy

I’m pretty sure Yoni was telling her jokes about seeing peoples naked rear ends. She found it all very funny. I went *click click click*.

Can I have two nominations for THAT SHOT in one blog post?
I say yes, it’s my own blog.

THAT SHOT!

Daci, you are so unbelievably elegant. Really.

IMG_0334 copy

If that isn’t the sweetest…

IMG_0344 copy

As we were finishing up Daci pulled some wellies out of her trunk and asked if I would like to use them at all. Daci, you’re just killing me here. You look so innocent and so refined all at once.

IMG_0436 copy

Daci and Yoni, I’m terribly depressed that I won’t be joining you on the 28th for your Jewish spectacular of a wedding. Why didn’t I get this idea to launch a photography business, much much sooner? Idiot!

I enjoyed my time with you immensely, and it would be my pleasure to do it again sometime. A Trash The Dress? First anniversary shoot? Family shoot with Ike? Your first child’s Bat/Bar Mitzvah? Whatever it is, I’m there. Or you can comehere, since I know how much you two like to travel.

Only one more month to go until you two make it official. Enjoy the ride, newlywed life is the BEST.

May 20, 2009 - 8:45 pm MCH - Sorry I am repeating myself BUT YOU ARE SOOOO GOOD! I can even imagine you doing shoots for magazines, on whatever topic really!

May 20, 2009 - 9:39 pm Gen - Yeah...I can see why they win! They do seem pretty rockin'!! And what are the chances of a peacock, whose colours happen to blend in so perfectly with your palette, just showing up like that! Seriously...I need to move to a city where cool stuff like that happens!!!!!!

May 20, 2009 - 10:17 pm Tamara - I LOVE LOVE the first shot of her in the boots. SOOOOO amazing.

May 20, 2009 - 10:18 pm Tamara - Also, you should share your vintage touches with us. I'd love to learn your technique. It's so cool.

May 20, 2009 - 10:36 pm Sheila - Jenna - you really are so tremendously talented. LOVE this shoot.

May 20, 2009 - 10:52 pm Whitney R. - My favorite? Him kissing her shoulder - SO SWEET! These are all great, Jenna. You do such a great job!

May 20, 2009 - 11:00 pm kalen - love it - they're both so photogenic - you're totally right - but the shots really help capture that. colors are great, editing is great, and i love all the cute little props. gorgeous! and i hope it doesn't offend you for me to say this, but i'm not one of the ppl who automatically thought you were like professional photographer when you first started. instead, i thought you were naturally pretty damn good. however, over time, it is REALLY showing in your pictures that you're improving - becoming more creative, more playful, and overall just a better photographer. i really love to watch this progress & your work is just adorable! :) good job, jenna.

May 20, 2009 - 11:46 pm Kasia Fink - Love that old weddings book. How perfect and quirky and lovely.

May 21, 2009 - 1:05 am Elizabeth - Jenna, these are great! I love them.

May 21, 2009 - 1:35 am D - That is one of the BEST ring shots I've ever seen! Absolutely flawless and awesome.

May 21, 2009 - 3:22 am Becky (rksquared) - The ninth from the bottom (under "HOT HOT HOT") is my fave. The processing really accentuates the mood of the shot. Also, looking through the set, it seems obvious that the three of you really connected as far as direction/posing go. Very creative, very natural. Last thing, you are the second TX photog I've seen that has a peacock just "show up" at a shoot. Please tell me that peacocks are not just roaming freely around the state of Texas, b/c if they are, the jealousy might kill me.

May 21, 2009 - 7:12 am Anna - It's so cool watching you grow as a photographer! Your pictures just keep getting better and better! This photo session looks like it was so much fun. I love that ring shot! It's absolutely stunning. What lens are you using btw for most of these shots?

May 21, 2009 - 12:07 pm Hannah - Stunning shoot, Jenna. My favourite of your shoots so far. I love the peacock shots, her dress just looks brilliant against them. I have to agree with Kalen, you are improving exponentially with each shoot you have shared. I'm sure we'll see you as a Knot favourite soon enough. Such a shame you can't shoot their wedding, too. Jewish weddings seem like such a lovely but challenging subject for photographers with the Bedeken, the Chuppah (with the seven circles) and the Hora (I'm Jewish so down with the lingo...). I really hope I can shoot some Jewish weddings one day once I have the skillz (and equipment)

May 21, 2009 - 12:31 pm Jenn - There's something about you that attracts random, loose animals! First the cow, now a peacock?! LOVE the rainboots and the picture frame :)

May 21, 2009 - 3:06 pm Jennifer - Jenna, your photos give me goose bumps! They are soooooo good!! I have a good friend in Abilene and should I ever make it out there, I'm hunting you down and we shall do photos! I, however, am not nearly as photogenic as that girl! She's gorgeous!

May 21, 2009 - 7:06 pm Korey - Wow, you got a ton of great shots! The one where he is kissing her shoulder is magazine-worthy for sure, and the B&W under "hot, hot, hot." These are great!!

May 21, 2009 - 7:15 pm Kathryn - Oh.my.gosh. Seriously hands down my favorite yet! I can't even narrow it down to tell you which ones are my favorite. One word Jenna: LOVE!

May 21, 2009 - 7:54 pm PF - Jenna I am in love with your work! These are gorgeous and I can't wait for my photo shoot in a few weeks!

May 21, 2009 - 8:02 pm Kelli Nicole - LOVE these! That ring shot is awesome and those trees looks amazing! Great find and great pictures!

May 21, 2009 - 8:19 pm Robin - Wow, great shots! I have always wanted to invest in a camera and learn how to take pics! You are very talently, great work!

May 22, 2009 - 3:19 am Tasha - I love that you were able to capture the peacock. The colors were so fun and it kind of just worked out that the his tail feather and her dress matched.

May 22, 2009 - 3:01 pm kari - no they are actually actions I created using TRA! glad you like them!

May 27, 2009 - 4:27 pm Onada Photography - Love everything about this session and all the props too. Awesome job Jenna!

May 28, 2009 - 12:52 pm Kristin (Quiche) - Jenna! Wow!! These shots are wonderful! Truly stunning subject as well! :) GORGEOUS.

May 29, 2009 - 3:13 pm JewishWeddingNetwork - You captured DJ and Yoni's personalities so well! Great photos - I love how the colors pop. Wonderful job photographing a great couple!

May 30, 2009 - 8:40 am Mandy - Okay. I'm absolutely in love with the chemistry of this couple. The shot where he is kissing her shoulder.... I LOVE it!
