Bridal: Mary

As a fellow photographer, Mary was a little more willing than most to just “wing it” in terms of location. She told me where she lived, I zoomed in on a good starting point using Google Maps and said “We’ll start here and drive until we find something good.” I’m not quite sure how I would run this business without Google Maps actually…

So I met up with Mary and Mary (hereafter known as Cousin Mary) at 7-Eleven and we started driving, hoping we would find something good before we ran out of light. We passed a few spots that looked okay, and one fenced off wheat field that looked promising (fenced off = trespassing necessary), but we kept driving a little farther, and then just a little bit farther than that, and then we found IT. An old abandoned house with porch, barns, pastures, and the most perfect grove of new trees I have ever lain eyes on.

Okay, obviously I loved this shoot. I think it’s time to introduce you to Mary with a pretty picture. I have a feeling Mary and I are going to be spending a lot of time together in the near future. You’ll have to wait a little bit longer to find out how!

We were shooting on the porch of this old house when I looked over and shouted “Spider!” Tarantula would have been more accurate, since this was the biggest creature with 8 legs I have ever been privilege to witness in real life. Of course I was the smart one who walked on the board across from it, causing the board to raise up and the creature to go shooting across the porch. We didn’t stay in that spot much longer. :)

I readily admit that I am not a tattoo person, but I do think the back of her dress frames her ink perfectly. And don’t you love the way the red accents on my antique chair match her red shoes?

I realize that this photo and the one below it are almost identical, but I just love them both so much. What an unbelievable spot for this bride, in this dress. Mary, I’m not sure this fabulousness could ever be duplicated by anyone else.

THAT SHOT! x10

I freely admit to stalking my own photos when clients put them up on their Facebook accounts and I laughed out loud when one of Mary’s friends commented on this picture and asked “I’m sorry, did you just pop out of a fairy tale?”

maryfineartbridals-7

She most certainly made that veil all by herself, and the fascinator came from Craigslist.

maryfineartbridals-8

Obviously I really loved this fascinator. Awesome find Mary!

I’m also working on incorporating interesting angles and perspectives. I think the alternative framing really works here.

maryfineartbridals-9

Am I allowed to say I think she has a hot body? Is that inappropriate?

maryfineartbridals-10

Because seriously Mary, I would love to look like that in any dress, particularly one as unforgiving as yours. You are my own little Grecian Goddess.

maryfineartbridals-11

On America’s Next Top Model, Nigel always says he is looking for a “muse”. I think I’ve found one in Mary! Purrrrty.

maryfineartbridals-12

maryfineartbridals-13

There’s that tattoo again. It’s really growing on me.

maryfineartbridals-14

Cousin Mary makes her debut on the blog! She’s such a cutie and made for the perfect hair and wardrobe consultant for Mary the Bride.

maryfineartbridals-15

Cousin Mary also frequently became the pack horse. And she did it with a smile on her face because she is fabulous like that!

maryfineartbridals-16

Pictured with wheat bouquet that Mary the Bride also made herself. She’s a crafty one I tell you, don’t you think her wedding will be fabulous?

maryfineartbridals-17

2nd Runner-up for That Shot. Gah! You’re killing me here with your cuteness Mary.

maryfineartbridals-18

Mary ran through a cow pasture in kitten heels. That deserves some kind of prize, right?

maryfineartbridals-19

We jumped in the car as the sun was fading to try to grab a few more. Look at the way her dress falls in the back. Dreamy isn’t it? I like it even better than a train!

maryfineartbridals-20

I said “Props?” and Mary came up with gun, guitar, and aviators. So she’s brave (the spider), crafty (the bouquet and veil), and fly.

SOOC!

After:

My, my, my. This seems like the kind of bridal image a fiance would love most, no?

maryfineartbridals-21

A little bit of 70’s action felt appropriate here.

maryfineartbridals-22

I like the irony of the slight pink tint from TRA2 Lith-E-Yum that adds a little bit of irony to this shot.

maryfineartbridals-23

When she put those glasses on, she BROUGHT IT. I love how committed she was.

maryfineartbridals-24

Apparently that orange tip lets people know this isn’t really a dangerous gun? I don’t know anything about guns so I was a little nervous to have it pointed directly at me. If I had known what the orange tip meant I would have photoshopped it out, but as it stands I like the pop of color it gives.

maryfineartbridals-25

I wanted to get close but those darn aviators were so reflective. I tried to hide behind her hair, but Cousin Mary is on the left side as well…

maryfineartbridals-26

So gave up trying to hide and went ahead and did a self portrait. :)

maryfineartbridals-27

And some exciting news to end this post…

I’ll be shooting Mary’s wedding in October! I’m thrilled that she was able to make it work with her budget (she’s very frugal and I admire that!). Mary, it’s going to be a fabulous day and I’m honored to be able to spend it with you. I look forward to seeing you and Cousin Mary again soon!

May 28, 2009 - 11:55 am Kat Forsyth - I'm loving these! That last bunch with the gun and cigar are just too COOL. Or is that hot? Whatever. I also love your chair - good buy! Congrats on shooting Mary's wedding - is it going to be your first real paid lead photographer wedding? AWESOME.

May 28, 2009 - 12:18 pm Katie - My jaw dropped when I saw the avaiters, gun, and cigar - those shots are FABULOUS!!! Love, love, love the juxtaposition of everything - straight out of a movie.

May 28, 2009 - 12:44 pm Sheila - Wow, she is totally adorable! Love this!

May 28, 2009 - 4:38 pm MCH - I couldn't even finish your post and looking at all the pictures because I first have to say I love her dress!!! But also, she is SO photogenic!!!! She is mysterious, sweet, beautiful, artistic. I love everything about her, also her tattoo :) And you Jenna, you captured it so well, going along with her artistic side. I love your shots! This is so much more than a photo shoot. It's.... it's.... well, do something big with this!!

May 28, 2009 - 4:41 pm MCH - Number 11 is my favorite!!

May 28, 2009 - 5:00 pm Angie De La O - garsh!!! I LOVE these- especially the B&W one- she looks like Winona ryder from the Dracula movie!!!! I love it!!

May 28, 2009 - 5:37 pm Mary - Eeeeee. Thank you so much Jenna. Your commentary makes me smile almost as much as the beautiful images you produced for me. :] Also, @MCH, the thing is, I'm NOT photogenic at all! Jenna is just crazy-gifted with directions and framing and know *just* when to release the shutter.

May 28, 2009 - 6:46 pm Tasha - I love that she was able to go on the fly with finding a spot. Don't you love that when people are willing to go on the fly?

May 29, 2009 - 3:11 am Hannah - Brilliant shoot, Jenna, you seem to have captured Mary’s personality perfectly! She does look amazing in that dress; if I wore that it would stick in All The Wrong Places. What lenses did you use for this shoot, if you don’t mine me asking? Again, lovely job. I’m always so excited when I see a new shoot from you pop up from this blog.

May 29, 2009 - 6:05 am Tamara - Such a great shoot. There are so many I love. I've grown to love photographing people with tattoos. They're fascinating to me. I love the way her leg is twisted in the one with the bouquet and I love the texture on the one a couple times down. I can never get good texture but I think I have an idea now on how to improve it!

May 29, 2009 - 4:37 pm alex.kruk photography - WOW this spider would freak me out ! I am sorry but I hate spiders - every single kind of them. Pictures are beautiful and what an idea with mafia shoots ;) alex

May 29, 2009 - 4:38 pm alex.kruk photography - ... and I forgot - I love her shoes ! Tatoo is pretty cool too.

May 30, 2009 - 5:58 am Anna - These are beautiful! I really like #6 and #7. I also LOVE the b+w one of her running.

June 1, 2009 - 8:10 pm Chelsea McGowan - Beautiful! I'm all about brides with style, and this one seems to have brought that to the table in spades. Well done!

June 2, 2009 - 6:14 pm Korey - BEAUTIFUL!! I was totally thinking the fairy tale comment and I laughed out loud when I read it! Very ethereal and beautiful.

June 3, 2009 - 4:22 pm Allison Davis - Love the "hot bod" shot. Beautiful work Jenna!

December 18, 2009 - 12:36 pm Annabel - I am going to faint with the fabulousness of these photographs!!! xXx

December 11, 2009 - 8:54 am Wedding: Mary + Opie » Jenna Cole Photography-Dallas, TX - [...] wish they had time to go back and re-edit some of their stuff, and I admit to feeling that way with some of Mary’s portraits. However, her session was so awesomely unique that even as a newbie I was able to capture some [...]
