Just before the start of 2010 I attended a workshop held by Ben Q Photography of Dallas, where I was able to experience shooting in a studio style setup and learning a bit more about working with flash. I’ve had these photos sitting edited on computer for months now, but I wanted to save them for my maternity leave when I knew I wouldn’t have new work to show you due to the new little one that takes up almost all of my time.
They had a really fantastic setup filled with all sorts of wintery vintage themed items.

The model we were working with that day was BenQ’s wife, ChrysQ, also of ChrysQ’s Luxe Slipcovers. Chrys is a really fantastic model, very confident in front of the camera and full of unique pose ideas, plus her slipcovers are just as gorgeous in person as they are in the photographs. I loved them so much I ended up ordering a custom one for my own wedding album!

The images above were shot with a wide aperture, no flash, but I did get a chance to hook up my camera to Ben’s lighting and pose Chrys for a few shots using the studio setup. I was pretty proud of the pose I came up with when it was my turn to work with her!

We ended our shooting time outdoors, where we learned a few really interesting tricks that I hope to be able to incorporate into my own shooting style in the future. I made a New Years Resolution this year to develop a “concept shoot” and execute it, and this workshop definitely gave me a few ideas for that. Thanks to Ben and Chrys for being so fabulous and hosting such a great workshop.
